Assignment: Plan Your Own College Visit Field Trip

Objective: Imagine you have an unlimited budget to plan a college visit. Your task is to create a detailed, two-day itinerary for visiting the college or university of your choice. Think creatively, consider all details, and include the experiences you believe would help you learn the most about the campus and its community.

Day 1: Research & Itinerary Creation

  1. Choose a College/University

    • Select a college or university you are interested in visiting. Look into its campus, location, programs, and anything else that makes it appealing to you.

  2. Transportation and Accommodation

    • Research options for how you would get to the college (e.g., flights, private car service, train).

    • Choose an ideal accommodation near the campus (e.g., upscale hotel, bed and breakfast, or campus housing).

    • Estimate the time it will take to reach the college and check into your accommodation.

  3. Campus Activities

    • Schedule a variety of campus activities you’d like to do, such as:

      • A guided campus tour

      • Meeting with an admissions counselor

      • Sitting in on a class in a subject that interests you

      • Meeting with a professor or student group leader in your field of interest

      • Participating in a student activity or club event if possible

    • Provide a brief description of why each activity is valuable to you in learning more about the college.

  4. Dining and Local Exploration

    • Identify places on or near campus where you’d like to eat. Research popular student spots or local restaurants.

    • Include a dinner with a current student or faculty member to gain insider knowledge about the campus culture.

  5. Special Experiences

    • If your chosen college is known for specific landmarks, programs, or experiences (e.g., art galleries, sporting events, research labs), include a special activity in your plan.

    • Explain why this experience interests you and how it relates to your college goals.

Day 2: Presentation Creation

  1. Itinerary Presentation

    • Create a presentation of your two-day college visit plan. Include all the details from Day 1: transportation, accommodation, activities, meals, and special experiences.

    • Make sure each section includes images or graphics that represent each part of your trip.

  2. Reflection

    • Write a brief reflection (1-2 paragraphs) on what you hope to gain from this college visit. Consider:

      • What excites you the most about this college?

      • How would this trip help you decide if the college is a good fit?

  3. Presentation

    • On the second day, be prepared to present your college visit plan to the class.

    • Explain your choices and the purpose behind each activity.

Grading Criteria

  • Research & Planning: Quality and creativity in choosing transportation, accommodation, and activities.

  • Presentation: Clarity, detail, and visuals in the presentation.

  • Reflection: Thoughtful and insightful reflection on the purpose of the college visit.
