Spring break of 2024 was not just a break from school for a group of dedicated students; it was the beginning of a transformative journey. What started as a community service project has blossomed into a full-fledged clothing brand called Holding Hearts. This brand, driven by a mission to spread love and support among teenagers, has already begun making a significant impact. Here’s the story of how it all began and what Holding Hearts stands for.

The Birth of Holding Hearts

During spring break, I had the privilege of working with seven remarkable students at the Lansing Art Gallery. Our initial goal was to engage in a community service project focused on mental health awareness for middle and high school students. Little did we know that this project would spark the creation of something much larger.

A Creative and Meaningful Start

Throughout the week, the students immersed themselves in various creative activities. They designed a unique logo, learned sewing techniques, and explored screen printing. These hands-on experiences were more than just skill-building; they were opportunities for the students to express their passion and dedication to a cause close to their hearts.

We visited inspiring places like the Nelson Art Gallery, REACH Art Studio, and ALT Printing, drawing inspiration and gathering ideas for what would eventually become Holding Hearts. The students’ enthusiasm and commitment were palpable, and it was clear that this project was special.

From Project to Purpose

As the week progressed, the students began to see the potential of their work. They envisioned a brand that could go beyond just clothing. Holding Hearts became their platform to spread love and support to other teenagers who might be struggling mentally. The mission was simple yet profound: to help teens feel loved and understood during challenging times.
